A US national was rounded up by Nepali police for allegedly sexually abusing young boys.

Police said they nabbed the 48-year-old American with three boys aged between 12 and 14 from a hotel room in Kathmandu.

"We arrested him red-handed from a room following complaints from some of his victims,"  Nawa Raj Silwal, Nepal's head of central investigation bureau, told AFP.

A Nepali man was also detained as police believe he was supplying underage boys to the suspect.

The suspected duo will be kept in police custody for six days, Silwal further said.

The US Embassy in Kathmandu is yet to make a comment on the issue.

Child sex tourism has remained under the radar in Nepal. While a lot of people are not aware of it, there has been a proliferation of such activities in the South Asian nation.

There have been instances in the past of foreigners being convicted for child sex abuse.

La Strada International, a leading European NGO, quoted some Nepali children in the sex trade saying that a quarter of their customers were Europeans and little over a fifth of them were from America.
