All Indian villages will be electrified by May 2017, India's Union minister Piyush Goyal said.

He also announced disbursal of soft loans to states for providing electricity to every household.

If the government provides electricity to all villages by May 2017, it will attain its goals a year before the 1,000-day deadline initially set by the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) dispensation.

"The states would get soft loans to achieve 100 per cent target of household electrification," he said during a conference in India's western state of Gujarat.
