Election Commissioner Achal Kumar Joti has been appointed India's next chief election commissioner.
Joti, 64, was chief secretary of Gujarat while Prime Minister Narendra Modi was chief minister of the state.
Joti takes over from Nasim Zaidi.
Joti will continue in office till January 2017.
PTI reported that Joti has also served as Gujarat vigilance commissioner and worked in various capacities in the state, including as the chairman of the Kandla Port Trust between 1999 and 2004 and the managing director of the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL).
It added that he was also secretary in the industry, revenue and water supply departments in the state.
