Indian duo still has chance to win bronze medal but they need to overcome Czech pair Lucie Hradecka and Radek Stepanek today
Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna lost in the semi-finals of the mixed doubles tennis event to Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram at the Rio Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
The Indians won the first set but lost the next one and the tiebreak 3-10 in one hour and 17 minutes at the Olympic Tennis Centre on Saturday.
The Indian duo will now play Lucie Hradecka and Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic for the bronze medal on Sunday.
Venus and Ram will take on fellow Americans Jack Sock and Bethanie Mattek-Sands for the gold medal. Jack and Bethanie defeated Lucie and Stepanek 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the other semi-final.
Leander Paes is so far the only Indian tennis player to win a medal at the Olympics. He had won a bronze medal in Atlanta 1996.
Sania and Bopanna, however, are confident of bouncing back from the defeat.
"Ten minutes after you lose a match like that it`s difficult to be positive, but in tennis we don`t get many chances. We don`t get two chances in a week, usually. We are fortunate to have a chance at another medal," Sania said.
"It was unfortunate that results were not in our favour. We have to do the right thing and recover as soon as possible mentally and physically, probably more mentally than physically, and try and come out there and have another shot at a medal," she added.
"We have to try and get some sleep and put some food in our bodies and try and recover for tomorrow."
