As the hashtag #RIPSelena trended briefly on Twitter, paying tribute to American singer Selena Quantanilla who was murdered 21 years ago, many on Twitter mistook her for pop star Selena Gomez.

Selena Quintanilla, who was among the leading Mexican-American stars through the nineties and known as the Queen of Tejano music, was shot dead in 1995 by a friend and former employee.

Selena Gomez, 24, rose to fame with her role in the TV series Wizards of Waverly Place, is the voice behind 
hits such as Stars Dance (Come & Get It), Slow Down (Stars Dance) and Falling Down (Kiss & Tell).
