VVIP chopper deal case: No Dubai court order to extradite Christian Michel to India
Contrary to reports appearing Tuesday, there is no Dubai court order that Christen Michel be extradited to India.
Michel is a middleman wanted in connection with the Rs 3,600 crore AgustaWestand VVIP chopper deal case.
News reports Tuesday had said a Dubai court had ordered his extradition to India.
On Wednesday however it emerged that the court had not ordered Michel's extradition, it had only voiced an opinion on his possible extradition.
Michel is a UK citizen.
Authorities had asked the court whether the UAE could extradite the national of another country to a third country.
The court had reportedly said that they could.
The external affairs ministry had asked its embassy in the UAE to find out all the details relating to the issue.
The AgustaWestland deal was signed in 2007 for the purchase of 12 luxury helicopters that would be used to ferry top leaders including the president, the prime minister, and former prime ministers.
In 2014, the government scrapped the contract amid allegations that AgustaWestland, which was supplying the luxury helicopters, had paid kickbacks in India.
Former Indian Air Force Chief SP Tyagi was arrested in 2016 over allegations that he had accepted bribes to tailor the specifications of the deal. Tyagi is the first and only air force chief to have been arrested.
