Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh will be the Congress party's chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming elections in the state, the party's vice-president Rahul Gandhi announced on Saturday.

Rahul Gandhi, who was addressing a rally in the northern hill state's Mandi district, said he was confident that Virbhadra Singh would be elected chief minister of Himachal Pradesh for the seventh time since he had done a lot of work for the development of the state.

The Congress vice-president added that Virbhadra Singh would have the full backing of the party.

The Assembly elections in the state are likely to be held before the end of the year.

Virbhadra Singh is currently facing stiff opposition within the party from Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee president Sukhwinder Sukhu.
