On the occasion of the 93rd birthday of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Uttar Pradesh government has released 93 prisoners from various prisons of the state.
The prisoners released had completed their tenure in jail but were not released as they could not pay the fine imposed on them.
"It was decided to set free 93 prisoners convicted in different cases on the 93rd birthday of the former prime minister. These prisoners have completed their tenure in jail but could not be released due to non-payment of fines imposed on them," PTI quoted Principal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar as saying.
The prisoners to be released were picked randomly from a slot of 135 such convicts.
The prison department was asked to check if the fines could be cleared by NGOs, trusts and others.
