The mob also shot videos and clicked selfies of the brutal incident, which went viral on social media on Friday.

The victim, identified as Madhu, was allegedly beaten with sticks and was handed over to the police.

The police took him to the hospital after his health deteriorated but the doctors declared him dead on arrival.

According to reports, the man was accused of theft in 2016 and was reportedly infamous for stealing rice and other food items from shops.

However, a report quoted the mother of the 27-year-old deceased saying that Madhu was not a thief, instead, he was of "unsound mind".

The police have registered an FIR under section 174 CrPC against unknown people.
