A Haldwani-based transporter tried to kill himself -- he'd reportedly consumed poison -- at Uttarakhand Agriculture Minister Subodh Uniyal's janta darbar at the BJP office in Dehradun.

Unhappy with the losses he had incurred due to GST and demonetisation, the 44-year-old man, Prakash Pandey, collapsed in front of the minister after telling him about his debts.

The man said he was unable to repay loans taken from finance companies and had already written to the prime minister, the finance minister, and BJP president Amit Shah, asking that the interest on his loans be waived.

After failing to pay the EMIs on three vehicles he'd taken on loan, Pandey had come to Dehradun to meet Uniyal.

During his outburst, news reports quoted Pandey as saying the Congress was a better party since he had been "financially ruined" because of the BJP.

"While he was still recounting his story, he collapsed. The party workers rushed him to the ICU of Doon hospital in my car," PTI reported Uniyal as saying.

The incident took place on Saturday afternoon. Pandey had come to the BJP with a bunch of documents including his letters to the Prime Minister's Office and the finance minister.

Pandey was rushed to the Doon Hospital where he was admitted to the ICU. He was later transferred to a private hospital.

Doctors said Pandey was in critical condition and was being kept under observation.
