Under the Project 75 programme, 'Karanj' is the third of the six Scorpene-class submarines built by MDL.
Karanj follows INS Kalvari which was commissioned on December 14 last year and Khandari, which is undergoing sea trials at present.
The Scorpene submarines are seen as new-age equipment deployed to overhaul and refurbish India's submarine fleet.
With the growing presence of Chinese navy in the Indian Ocean, the deployment of Scorpene submarines comes like a move of utter significance.
