AR Rahman's priceless contribution to the world of music is inexplicable, irreplaceable; something that can never be recreated or surpassed in this lifetime. 

As the maestro rings in his 51st birthday today, we take a look at some of the lesser-known facts about the emperor of melodies.

- AR Rahman was born as Dileep Shekhar in Tamil Nadu. His father, Rajagopala Kulashekhara, was a renowned music composer/director and worked chiefly for Malayalam cinema. 

- Allah Rakha Rahman is also known as Isai Puyal and the Mozart of Madras.

- The maestro is also skilled in playing musical instruments like guitar, drums, fingerboard, keyboard, piano, among others. 

- Rahman takes pride in collaborating with musicians and artists from all across the globe, some of the most noticeable acts include his collaboration with, Nicole Scherzinger, SuperHeavy, will.i.am, Dido among others.

- Rahman belts a long list of awards and honours ranging from, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, National Award, National Lata Mangeshkar Award to Filmfare awards and prestigious international accolades like the Grammys, the BAFTA Awards, the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.

- Rahman's contribution to regional cinema is also unparalleled. He rendered music to some of the most celebrated Hindi movies like Taal, Lagaan, Sathiya, Rang De Basanti, Yuva, Rockstar, Jodha Akbar, Guru, Swades, Dil Se and Hollywood blockbusters like 127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire. The music wizard is known to have worked closely with Director Mani Ratnam. 

- Rahman also has honorary doctorates from Middlesex University, Aligarh Muslim University, Anna University in Chennai, Miami University in Ohio and Berklee College of Music, US.
