The procurement was cleared at a meeting chaired by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

The weapons will be used by troops deployed along the borders.

Army Chief Bipin Rawat has in the past asked for modernisation of the armed forces since future wars, he said, would be fought in difficult circumstances.

He further assured that there would be full utilisation of technology if the government assist armed forces.

According to reports, the army has been planning to equip around a lakh soldiers with assault rifles this year.

The rifles will be replacing more than two-decade-old weapons that have outlived its usefulness.
