Maoists in Chhattisgarh were able to change old Rs 500 and 1,000 notes after demonetisation, ANI has reported.

Police said the Maoists were able change the old notes by putting pressure on villagers and contractors in naxal areas.

"Balance sheet has been recovered in Narayanpur encounter, where six naxals were killed, mentions their expenses in last one year, also says they had 500s and 1000s when demonetisation took place," anti-naxal ops DG DM Awasthi told ANI.

"Naxals have converted old notes by creating pressure on innocent villagers and contractors working in naxal areas. It has also been noticed after demonetisation that security forces are much more entering most affected areas in Bastar," Awasthi added.

The Narendra Modi government, when it announced demonetisation on November 8 last year, has said one of its goals had been to curb terror funding. The other had been to curb black money.

ANI reported that naxals in Abujhmadh had been able to change old notes worth Rs 2 lakh.

The police had got that information from documents recovered after the Naryanpur encounter mentioned above.
