A large group of students in Allahabad torched a bus and shouted slogans on Monday in protest against the death of a law student after he was allegedly thrashed by a group of men during an argument in a market on Saturday.
The riot police had to be called in to control the students of the Allahabad University, media reports said.
The law student, Dilip Saroj, died on Sunday after he was allegedly thrashed by a group of men with hockey sticks, bricks and iron rods near a restaurant in the city's Katra Bazaar.
A passerby reportedly shot a video in which the victim lying unconscious on the steps of the restaurant.
The main accused, a waiter at the restaurant, Munna Chauhan, has been arrested. He was the one who hit Dilip Saroj with the iron rod, police said.
The police registered a First Information Report (FIR) based on a complaint filed by Dilip's brother.
According to the police, Dilip, who lived in a rented house in Allahabad, had gone out for dinner with two friends.
They reportedly had an argument with the attackers which soon turned violent. Dilip's friends managed to escape.
