GadgetFlow is a product discovery platform, which helps you find products online in one place. It was founded in 2012 with an aim to simplify online product exploration.
The platform adds 10 new products every day to their website, allowing customers to discover, save and buy them.
WION Edge interviewed Evan Varsamis, the founder & CEO of GadgetFlow, to understand more about the way this platform functions. Excerpts:
What was the inspiration behind launching GadgetFlow?
Everything started in an apartment in 2012, not in a garage like many startup stories do. Three friends, all aged 21, were working on a design inspiration blog and curating content for designers and artists. They were publishing new content almost every day and the blog was generating a few thousand dollars every month just from sponsored posts and banner advertising. It was a way for them to stay creative and it also brought in some revenue.
What is the X-factor behind 10 new innovative products you feature every day?
Our goal is to simplify online product exploration. Therefore, we've been publishing 10 new curated products by our team every day including weekends and holidays. People appreciate the time we spend finding the best products from the web and showcase them under one roof because when they want to purchase something new, either for personal use or a gift, they visit our platform and they can easily find hundreds of interesting and unique products.
Can people buy the products listed on your website or are they crowdfunded?
We don't sell them directly. We simply showcase the products we list on our platform. To purchase them, customers will have to click ‘buy now’ and get redirected to the seller's website. It can be a marketplace listing such as ETSY or Amazon or even an e-commerce website or crowdfunding project.
Do you use and recommend the products listed on your website or are they simply curated from the web?
We do have our recommended list which is included under the ‘favorite picks of the week’.
What is the most innovative product ever recommended on your website?
There’s no particular product, there are hundreds of them. We have many products which gave us 1,50,000 pins or 1,00,000 shares on Facebook.
Do you have a separate product review category catered to specific groups like women?
Yes, we have over 140 categories and sub-categories.
What's the next stage of growth?
We are planning to launch our subscription box later this year. We are also planning to start selling some of the products you see on our platform directly at a competitive price.
Have you thought of selling these products through your website directly? In either case, why or why not?
It was hard in the beginning because we were still trying to figure out our position in the market. Now that we have it, it just makes sense to start selling the products directly instead of redirecting our users outside our platform.
What's unique about how you curate these products?
Quality, presentation and the fact that it’s not easy to find them outside of our platform. We obviously feature some popular products such as the latest sony HD projector but the idea behind 99 per cent of the products we showcase is that it is almost impossible to find them yourself without deep research.
