Women's World Cup: Mithali Raj, Deepti Sharma lead India to victory over Lanka

India defeated Sri Lanka by 16 runs at Derby in the Women's World Cup group match.

Indian captain Mithali Raj struck a defiant 53, her 48th ODI half-century, together with Deepti Sharma who hit a smart 78 shared a decisive 118-run third-wicket partnership to boost India's total to 232 for eight.

Indian bowler Jhulan Goswami struck early to peg back Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka batter Dilani Manodara tried to defy India with a well crafted half century but India held the upper hand as they beat the Lankans by 16 runs in the end.

"I've always enjoyed batting and stepping up when it's required," India captain Mithali Raj Raj said after winning the match.
